Tennessee

From the majestic, scenic mountains, fly fishing in the 22,000-plus miles of streams and reservoirs, and the roots of many styles of music to the numerous historical sites and museums, Tennessee will keep you on the go. The Volunteer State is readily accessible due to its unique geography: it shares its borders with 8 different states. Regardless of where you’re coming from, once you arrive in Tennessee, there are dozens of “must-see” attractions. Here are a few of them:

  • The Smokies: The Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Quiz time: What is the most popular national park in the USA? Most people would say Yellowstone, Yosemite, or the Grand Canyon...and most people would be wrong. The number one most visited US national park is the Great Smoky Mountains (AKA “Smokies”). Located in the small town of Gatlinburg, the area's natural beauty attracts campers, hikers, bikers, and skiers to discover the abundance of wilderness. A good starting point is Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies where you can check out the penguins, enjoy a ride in a glass boat, and swim with the sharks. Then jump on the chairlift and head for the 6,643-foot-high Clingmans Dome, with its Observation Tower perched atop the mountain's summit and offering 360-degree views.

  • Lookout Mountain. While we are discussing views, there is nothing quite like Lookout Mountain. Overlooking Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain is a guaranteed fabulous way to spend the day. Enjoy the excitement of climbing aboard the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, a mile-long journey on trolley-style cars at a steep incline. On the mountaintop, you will have a panorama of nature’s breathtaking beauty to choose from, including Rock City with its spectacular cliffs and scenic views, and Ruby Falls, the deepest cave and most massive underground waterfall in America. Don’t forget to see the fascinating Battles for Chattanooga Electric Map and Museum with its displays concerning the larger-than-life Battle Above The Clouds, fought in and around Chattanooga during the Civil War.

  • Speaking of the Civil War, if you are a Civil War buff, Tennessee's Civil War Heritage will make you feel like you have discovered the keys to the vault of history. The long-term effects of the battle-between-the-states played a massive role in shaping Tennessee. A little known fact is that Tennessee not only provided more soldiers for the Confederacy than any other state; it also contributed more troops for the North than any other Confederate state! Due to its proximity to the north, Tennessee was the site of many significant battles during the deadly conflict. The campaigns are over but not forgotten. The state is loaded with visitor centers, museums, and memorials like Fort Donelson National Battlefield, the site of the first significant Union victory and home to a cemetery, visitor center, fort, and a treasured pair of breeding eagles. Stopping at Shiloh National Military Park is a somber, chilling experience: it was where the first momentous Civil War battle in the west occurred and contains more than 3,500 Union graves. Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park is also of great historical importance, as is nearby Point Park Battlefield, where the infamous "Battle Above the Clouds" took place. All these sites, as well as Stones River National Cemetery, are part of the Tennessee Civil War Trails program.

  • Oak Ridge: American Museum of Science and Energy. If you are interested in the history of nuclear energy, a visit to The American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge is not an option. Learn the story of Oak Ridge's role in developing the nuclear bomb and the Manhattan Project. Videos, pictures, artifacts, and documents tell the story of this once immense facility. Other displays concern national defense and include models of weaponry, tools, and protective clothing used at the site.

  • Graceland and the Elvis Presley Memphis Complex. The King may be gone, but he is anything but forgotten. Graceland and the Elvis Presley Memphis Complex is by far considered the top attraction in Memphis. Unquestionably the most famous rock 'n' roll residence in the world, Graceland Mansion draws fans from every part of the globe, young and old alike. The tours of this stately home provide a unique glimpse into the King's life and are like going back in time since it is identical to the day when Elvis passed away in 1977. Also worth seeing are the family tomb, a vast collection of cars, aircraft, and memorabilia, and tours of where the King spent his time, including the music room, TV room, and Jungle Den. You can choose from a broad range of tour packages that include accommodations at the luxuriant Guest House at Graceland.

  • Birth of the Music Biz: No matter what your music tastes are, rock, country, soul, gospel, and blues, it is all here in Tennessee. Nashville is the heart of America’s country music scene, and Nashville is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame in the city's famous Music Row, as well as the Grand Ole Opry. Don’t forget Memphis, the home of gospel and blues, and famous for Beale Street, where the greats like Elvis got his first big break. Attractions include the Memphis Music Hall of Fame; WC Handy's House, the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, highlighting musical pioneers from the 1930s through to the 1970s; the STAX Museum of American Soul, and Sun Studio, where stars such as Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King, and Roy Orbison started their careers.

  • Dollywood. Named after the beloved country singer Dolly Parton, Dollywood has been for decades Tennessee's most popular ticketed attraction, attracting more than three million visitors annually. Located in the small town, cozy town of Pigeon Forge, this always bustling theme park provides family fun with its unique blend of down-home Smoky Mountains traditions and crafts, electrifying rides, and various forms of entertainment. The park offers more than 40 rides - including the Tennessee Tornado roller coaster and is spread across several themed areas such as Timber Canyon and Jukebox Junction.

  • While you are in the area of Dollywood, don't miss visiting The Titanic Museum, the world's largest Titanic museum in Pigeon Forge. The building is striking, built in the shape of the ship and half the scale of the original. Highlights include more than 400 Titanic related artifacts in 20 unique galleries that will create the illusion that you're actually on the ship. Self-guided tours take approximately two hours and are well worth the time.
  • The Museum of Appalachia. Located in Clinton, this large open-air museum is all about the people who settled the Appalachian Mountains and details their culture, livelihoods, and customs. One of the most realistic heritage villages in the US, it's an extraordinary way to spend a day as you travel into the past through hands-on activities such as weaving and farming. The main attraction is the museum itself, with more than 250,000 artifacts in its collection.

  • The Hermitage: President Andrew Jackson's Home. Located near Nashville is The Hermitage, the plantation home of the seventh US President, Andrew Jackson, aka “Old Hickory,” from 1804-1845. The house was built in 1819, shortly after Jackson became president, and is well worth a couple of hours needed to explore it. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park-like gardens and woods, and stop at the tomb where both Jackson and his wife were laid to rest. The mansion opened as a museum in 1889, and after restoration, looks precisely as did in Jackson's time, complete with numerous artifacts and documents relating to his presidency. Another Tennessee time-machine!

  • Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley Railroad. Tennessee has a lengthy history with the railroad. Along with the mighty Mississippi river, railways were of crucial importance for the shipping of wool and cotton during peacetime and military supplies during the Civil War. The good news is much of this gripping heritage has been preserved. The Tennessee Valley Railroad offers hour-long steam trips as well as mainline excursions, dinner packages, and the popular Tennessee Railfest.

  • Knoxville. Knoxville is an excellent place to begin exploring the Great Smoky Mountains, National Park. The first capital of the state, its most visible landmark is the Sunsphere Tower with its observation decks and views over the downtown area. The city also played a crucial role in the Civil War. The Confederate Memorial Hall recalls the siege of the town in 1863 and was used as the headquarters of Confederate General James Longstreet. Other downtown highlights include the Museum of East Tennessee History with its displays that show and tell the region's history and culture through artifacts and documents.

  • While you are in the Knoxville area, don’t forget to check out The Lost Sea Adventure. Located in Sweetwater, 46 miles from Knoxville, the Lost Sea is a vast cave system with the most significant underwater lake in the US. The guided tours are incredibly informative and are conducted on a boat a long the underground waterway with its numerous vast caverns and tunnels. The Lost Sea has a Civil War connection: Rebel soldiers mined the Lost Sea caverns for saltpeter, an ingredient of gunpowder. After the war, residents created a party room, called the Cavern Tavern. A great place to travel back in time!
