Maine

Maine is not a large state by most metrics. Of the 50 states, it ranks 9th for fewest people, 12th for the littlest area, and 13th for the lowest density in population. It also is remotely located in the extreme northeastern part of the United States, is the only state to border only one other state, and is the only state with a one-syllable name.

Consequently, “The Pine Tree State” is often overlooked in many areas, including vacation destinations. But what a mistake that is. Maine did not earn the nickname “Vacationland” for no good reason.

The state is a virtual treasure chest of tourist attractions. Miles and miles of ocean beaches, several iconic lighthouses, marinas jammed-packed with fishing boats, rugged, jagged coastlines, majestic, towering, and stately Pine Trees, acres of wild, untamed forests, wildlife, fishing, lobsters, windjammer sailing cruises, a rich and engrossing history, and urban attractions like museums, art galleries, guided tours, and theaters all combine to make Maine a magnet for tourism.

Let’s take a look at a few of the many fascinating ways to spend time in Maine:

  • The Old Port. Most visitors to Maine start in Portland, the state’s largest city, and The Old Port district is the perfect beginning to get a feel for the captivating history of the area and the enchanting buildings built in the second half of the 19th century. Many of these buildings were devastated by the Great Fire of 1866 but nearly every building in the Portland Waterfront Historic District destroyed by the fire has been restored. A tour of the district will allow you to discover the history of commerce of the area as the winter port for Canada as you stroll through the streets that take you back in time since they strongly resemble the mid-19th century.
  • The Portland Head Lighthouse. Lighthouses hold a special allure and have a romantic, adventurous image that persists to this day, and the Portland Head Lighthouse is no exception. Located slightly off-shore of Portland on Cape Elizabeth, the lighthouse has the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Standing 80 feet tall, the lighthouse offers a spectacular view of the ocean and the coastline. Be sure to take the 2-hour land tour and stop at the Museum and gift shop to see for yourself how technology has changed the operation of the lighthouse, check out the ancient artifacts, and pick up a few mementos to remind you of your visit.
  • Victoria Mansion. Another of Portland’s attractions is the Portland Victoria Mansion. Constructed in 1860, the mansion gives us an excellent snapshot of how the financially well-to-do residents of Portland lived in the immediate pre-civil war era. The elegant interior is loaded with many of the same objects of the day. The mansion strives to keep the house as close to it looked in those early days as possible while still telling the story of its unique development and evolution throughout the ages. The artwork, furniture, woodwork, and floral arrangements reflect a commitment to the incredibly meticulous and detailed craftsmanship that is sadly lacking today.
  • Portland Museum of Art. The Portland Museum of Art is home to more than 18,000 pieces of art that represent a broad range of styles, times, and artists. Many of the works are creations of artists from the Portland area, but many are works from well-known artists like Picasso, Warhol, Monet, and several other masterpieces. As added bonuses, the museum also offers a tour of the historic house located on the museum grounds that features the living standards of the years gone by and temporary exhibits that change periodically at different times of the year.
  • Kennebunkport. Before leaving the Portland area consider a stop at the picturesque coastal village of Kennebunkport, located 12.5 miles south of Portland. Take a stroll on Walker’s Point, the summer home area of the Bush family, plunge into the water at Kennebunkport Beach, drop in to the Seashore Trolley Museum, enjoy the view from Parson’s Way, and visit the numerous galleries, restaurants, and shops.
  • Old Orchard Beach. While you are still in the Portland area consider taking a nostalgic trip back in time to stop at the Old Orchard Beach, the last of New England amusement parks that are located smack-dab on the beach! For baby boomers, the amusement parks of the 1950s bring back memories of a simpler, less complicated time, and Orchard Beach is a fabulous place to allow the grandkids to enjoy the same experience. A day spent at one of today’s mega-parks with a family of four can easily cost $1,000 and result in standing in line for hours, only enjoying a few rides, and paying outlandish prices for unhealthy swill. Old Orchard Beach is different. The wide-open seven miles of beach space and the laid-back atmosphere gives the impression that there is enough room for everyone to experience the attractions (for an affordable price), and there is no need to be in a mad rush. Enjoy the Ferris wheel that takes riders over the ocean, the thrill of n old-school roller-coaster, salt-water taffy, ice cream, bumper cars, fried dough, and other offerings that are hard to find elsewhere.
  • Acadia National Park. No tour of Maine is complete without experiencing the scenic coastline of Arcadia National Park. Outdoor enthusiasts will be thrilled to be in close proximity to the thick, lush forests, streams, and lakes that provide every outdoor activity imaginable: fishing, hunting, cycling, hiking, kayaking, climbing, camping, and just reveling in the relaxing sights and sounds of Mother Nature.
  • Farnsworth Art Museum. Located in Rockland, The Farnsworth Art Museum is loyal to its Maine-born artists, and that includes three generations of Wyeth’s – N.C., Andrew, and James. But the museum does not limit its exhibitions to Maine talent only. Among the collections found here cover an impressive span of artistic talent: Fitz Henry Lane, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Childe Hassam, and several more. Current exhibitions include Women of Vision, The Farnsworth Collection, Transforming the Ordinary: Women in American Book Cover Design, Betsy Wyeth: Partner and Muse, and Robert Indiana: The Hartley Elegies. For art lovers, the Farnsworth Art Museum is an absolute “must-see.”
  • Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. While in Rockland, don’t overlook the intriguing Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. The stated mission of the museum is to “collect, preserve, exhibit, and operate pre-1940 aircraft, ground vehicles, engines, and related technologies significant to the evolution of transportation for the purpose of education.” and the museum more than delivers on that mission statement. The exhibits include everything from early designed bicycles, the works of the Wright brothers, and early “horseless carriages” to the first engines that made the industrial revolution possible. Our modern-day conveniences and efficient modes of transportation would be impossible without the works of these earlier visionaries, and seeing their designs up-close will give you a deep appreciation of what they accomplished, and what we enjoy today as a direct result of their overcoming what was once thought to be impossible.
  • And more places to see and things to do in Maine...much, much more. Scattered a long the coastline are several lighthouses, all with unique stories. Also, don’t forget the numerous parks, botanical gardens, harbors, cruises, museums, and other attractions too numerous to list.
